BOTOX®
Many are turning to Botox® to reduce moderate to severe frown lines between their brows, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet. This safe and effective medication is placed into your wrinkles using a tiny needle. It is used to eliminate facial wrinkles and frown lines by decreasing the movement of the muscles in these trouble areas. Botox® can brighten up your attitude and outlook, remove the wrinkles of time or make small improvements in an otherwise perfect face. Botox® has also been used successfully for patients with excessive sweating in the armpits, hands or feet.
Botox® is specially formulated with a purified protein, which relaxes the muscles when injected in the targeted area, ultimately reducing the appearance of frown lines and facial wrinkles. It is a minimally invasive procedure, allowing patients to return to normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. A topical anesthesia can be used, if necessary.
FDA approved, Botox® is a safe and effective procedure that provides patients with results that can last anywhere from 3-5 months on average.
Following the Botox® procedure it is not uncommon to experience some minor swelling, redness or bruising around the targeted site. Patients can take Tylenol and/or use ice packs to help reduce swelling and relieve any discomfort. Other possible side effects include drooping of the eyelid, nausea, headache and respiratory infection, but only occur in about 1% of patients. They are considered temporary and usually resolve themselves within a few weeks.
An exciting new application of Botox® is in the treatment of TMJ/TMD as well as tension headaches. If you experience clenching, grinding, or frequent headaches, please talk to Dr. Raborn about this promising therapy.
Dermal Fillers
Smoothing out folds and wrinkles can make an enormous difference in a person’s appearance and sometimes even make them look several years younger. Dermal fillers are used to help reverse the signs of aging and provide patients with a more natural, youthful appearance compared to surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are used to:
- Reduce or eliminate wrinkles
- Reduce the appearance of scars
- Enhance lips
- Enhance the contours of the face
We use Juvederm® Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus® in our office.
Dr. Raborn will work with you individually to determine the best filler for your individual circumstances. A topical ointment may be used to numb the targeted area. However, because of his injection expertise, Dr. Raborn usually uses dental blocks to profoundly numb the area, making this a pain-free procedure. Then, using a small needle, the dermal filler will carefully be injected into each wrinkle or scar being treated.
Side effects are uncommon, but can possibly include: allergic reactions, bacterial infection and bruising around the treated area. Results vary depending on the type of filler, but normally can last anywhere from nine months to a year.
